Steve Capper and David Reddix are (San Rafael High School, Class of 1971) – are two of the five ‘420 Guys’ who created the universally-accepted phrase ‘420’ when referring to cannabis.  At this point, almost everyone is familiar with the “well-coined term,” but not everyone knows its origin.  Here’s a clue – it has nothing to do with the date of April 20, yet it is time-related.  Hear first-hand how five bright students unwittingly added to the lexicon of American culture and the global zeitgeist – just by setting up their cannabis-related smoking meeting time.  Both Steve and David join our 420-lifestyle correspondent to tell this story and many more in a fun and interesting interview.

NORML Deputy Director, Ellen Komp

Ellen Komp is Deputy Director, California NORML (state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Ellen Komp is a longtime marijuana reform activist and author. She began in Los Angeles where she helped plan hemp rallies and volunteered for LA NORML and various initiative campaigns, including Prop. 215, which legalized medical marijuana in California in 1996. Ellen was an editor on Jack Herer’s book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” and has published her own book, “Tokin’ Women: A 4000-Year Herstory.” She is currently deputy director of California NORML and she blogs at TokinWoman.blogspot.com.

Since its inception in 1970, NORML has been at the forefront in the world of cannabis and the call for legislative repeal.   Ellen walks us through the history of this once fringe, and now iconic organization.  When you listen to the changes and growth of NORML, you hear a piece of American history and how the cannabis industry grew from the underground to become a multi-billion dollar enterprise that funds government coffers in dozens of states.  Now that cannabis is respected and the focus of great medical research, legalization continues to grow.   As old restrictions are lifted, one might wonder if NORML will outlive its pioneering usefulness.  Quite the contrary, NORML continues the fight to move public toward legalizing legalizing the responsible use of marijuana by adults.  NORML still leads the way as it works for consumer access to high quality marijuana that is safe, convenient and affordable.  There is a long road ahead, but NORML not only knows how to travel the road, they helped pave it.

Medical Cannabis as an Aide for What Ails You

Sara Payan is listed as “one of the Top 50 Women in Weed,” Sara Payan is an educator, public policy advocate, and writer. A stage 3 colon cancer survivor, she is also the Public Education Officer at The Apothecarium (a San Francisco-based dispensary with locations throughout Northern California, as well as in Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Jersey). For three years, Sara was vice-chair of the San Francisco Cannabis State Legalization Task Force & currently holds the seat representing medical cannabis patients and compassion programs on the San Francisco Cannabis Oversight Committee and is a member of the leadership team for the Bay Area chapter of Americans for Safe Access.

Legalization Pioneer and Martyr Eddy Lepp

Eddy Lepp is on the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of legalization pioneers. If you are one of the many who enjoy recreational marijuana in 17 U.S. states and medical marijuana in 37 American states, then you owe a huge debt of gratitude to an iconic figure in the movement, Eddy Lepp. Despite having a body now riddled with the cancer he has fought, Mr. Lepp (joined by his wife Sandra) speaks candidly with our correspondent Rich Walcoff in what may be his last interview.

He tells the heroic journey he went through that began with helping someone in need by providing them with medicinal marijuana.

This led to a vast grow in response to the need and demand of those around him. This also led to his arrest and incarceration with a 10-year sentence.

Although he was offered no jail time in return for turning in his buddies, Eddy Lepp chose instead to serve almost 9 years of his sentence.

Nonetheless, conviction by the state could not match the convictions of a true pioneer who helped pave the way for the legalization we see today. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) called him a ‘marijuana martyr’. Numerous law enforcement figures, including those on the prosecution side, now lament the treatment that Mr. Lepp received. In the end, Eddy Lepp’s dedication and determination was one of the keys that turned the legal battle of legalization in a new direction.
