Former Harborside CEO Andrew Berman

Andrew BermanAndrew Berman is the former CEO of Harborside, California’s largest dispensary.  He was also the mayor of Mill Valley twice.  Mr. Berman tells how changing markets are shaping the industry.  Public markets are driven out of Canada, cash flow dried up in some regions and the market got harder for some.  Andrew draws from his experience, his legal background and his venture capitalist experience to share his perspective on how the market is turning.  He also offers industry forecast outlook.

Women in Cannabis with Chase Roberts:
NORML Deputy Director, Ellen Komp

NORMLEllen Komp is Deputy Director, California NORML (state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Ellen Komp is a longtime marijuana reform activist and author. She began in Los Angeles where she helped plan hemp rallies and volunteered for LA NORML and various initiative campaigns, including Prop. 215, which legalized medical marijuana in California in 1996. Ellen was an editor on Jack Herer’s book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” and has published her own book, “Tokin’ Women: A 4000-Year Herstory.” She is currently deputy director of California NORML and she blogs at TokinWoman.blogspot.com.

Since its inception in 1970, NORML has been at the forefront in the world of cannabis and the call for legislative repeal.   Ellen walks us through the history of this once fringe, and now iconic organization.  When you listen to the changes and growth of NORML, you hear a piece of American history and how the cannabis industry grew from the underground to become a multi-billion dollar enterprise that funds government coffers in dozens of states.  Now that cannabis is respected and the focus of great medical research, legalization continues to grow.   As old restrictions are lifted, one might wonder if NORML will outlive its pioneering usefulness.  Quite the contrary, NORML continues the fight to move public toward legalizing legalizing the responsible use of marijuana by adults.  NORML still leads the way as it works for consumer access to high quality marijuana that is safe, convenient and affordable.  There is a long road ahead, but NORML not only knows how to travel the road, they helped pave it.

Medical Cannabinoids

Michigan State University emblemNorbert Kaminski is a Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University where he also serves as the Director of the Institute for Integrative Toxicology and the Interim Director of the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety.  He tells us about work on how inflammation occurs in the human body.  Inflammation in itself can be a helpful process that protects the body.  The problem comes when inflammation occurs inappropriately.  In such case it can lead to damage and destruction of our tissues.  His work is focused on using cannabinoids to try and temper that inflammatory response when its inappropriate.  Learn how marijuana once again leads the way to finding remedies for our ills.

A Review of Vaping

National Cannabis Industry Association logoAndrew Kline addresses the important of vaping.  After some surprising deaths and many injuries, a while ago, investigations into vaping ensued, legal questions arose and some states banned it altogether.  Many of the deaths and injuries resulted from the illicit market, but legitimate practices are understandably under scrutiny and reform.  Producer concern were for people to have the opportunity to purchase regulated, tested, reliable products, and to weed out the bad actors in the illegal market.  Research also shows that, when vaping cannabis, it must be done at a temperature that doesn’t change the molecular structure of the cannabinoids.  The critical issue of vaping drew the coordinated concern of research, law and production to immediately seek solutions.

W420 Lifestyles with Rich Walcoff:
Rio Anderson (Lady Sativa Farms) & Johnny Casali (Huckleberry Hills Farms), legacy Humboldt County growers – 2 of the “Humboldt High 5”

A look back to the Emerald Cup event in Santa Rosa, California.  W420 Lifestyles correspondent, Rich Walcoff, was on the field at the event, where he met with Rio & John, legacy Humboldt County growers with decades of experience.  They share their stories from then to now from the convention floor amid the cannabis convergence.

Rio Anderson reviews how growers have gone from the shadows, to marketing and telling people about what they do.  It is our legacy growers who are bringing their endemic values into to modern market that they welcome.  These values include, living close to the Earth, family heritage and small farms with regenerative agriculture.  Our pioneers feel that it is part of their duty to share something that was unique and beautiful and to preserve it as we go from the underground and into the bright light of modernization.
Trychemistry.com/

Johnny Casali reveals how, as much as things have changed, they have also remained the same.  Still, Johnny bears grave testimony of how eight years of his life were spent behind bars, merely for cultivating cannabis.   From his experiences, Johnny reminds us of the importance of community, family and friends.  This supersedes the quest for profit and blind ambition.  Experienced, down home growers are the roots of this plant business, and it is they who are instilling the core of what we need to move forward.

Cannabis in Cancer Research

Association of American CannabisDr. Jordan Tishler of the Association of Cannabis Specialists brings us up to date in how cannabis is playing a role in cancer research. Breakthroughs in treatment are becoming greater and clinical trials are also covering diverse aspects of cannabis treatment.  This reveals how cannabis has been under utilized.  More work is needed to broaden outreach and acceptance of cannabis because it is under-utilized.  Dr. Tishler’s underscore’s why.

CBD in England

The Original PharmacistJibril Farah is a pharmacist based in London who discovered e of the benefits of cannabis for people who were in treatment.  He tells us about CBD products in England, which became legal in 2019.  Marijuana became permissible with a prescription.  However, England did not readily have marijuana dispensaries so consumers had to have their prescriptions sent to The Netherlands, from where it would be shipped.  This added import fees to the cost.   Doctors were also nervous about prescribing cannabis because of potential legal repercussions if any problems were to result from its use.  These stories show reflect upon the universal problems that arise as we are in the transition of legalization.

Market Analysis

New Frontier DataJohn Kagia joins us from New Frontier Data, a leading research organization, as we continue our Discovery, Engage & Compete series into the world of cannabis.  What can intelligence and analysis do in the cannabis market.  Mr. Kagia tells us how product development is changing in the cannabis market.  Reasearch shows that consumers are not just interested in raw materials, such as cannabis flour, for making marijuana-based baking and such. Now, more buyers are interested in finished, premade goods, so they don’t have to do the work.  Dispensaries are changing the product placement in their show rooms to put raw materials and the back, and new finish goods out in front.  This demand is expanding the product base lines and marketing approaches.  So, it seems, it is time to expand thinking in the marketplace.

Pandemic Patterns

The Reality CheckCharles Butler is a talk show host, based in Chicago, in the third largest market in America. His podcast program, ‘The Reality Check with Charles Butler’, addresses cultural issues and current topics of interest.  Now that the pandemic has spread around the world, we are seeing patterns in how is spread across the nation.  Consequently, cultural differences have apparently played a role in the susceptibility to this contagion.  African American communities tend to have a more social closeness in communal gatherings which are often more intimate than many European American activities.  Unfortunately, closeness in family gatherings and social affairs hastens the spread of the disease.  Statistics show that Africans Americans have be hard hit by the pandemic because of this and other reasons.  We focus on these issues as all Americans must continue to modify habits and not get over confident.

The Problems of Legalization

National Cannabis Industry Association logoAndrew Kline is the Director of Public Policy for the National Cannabis Industry Association.  Burgeoning freedom for cannabis created confusion in legal states over regulating, who is going to regulate and how to handle licensing.  At the same time, other new problems developed as the illegal marketing of cannabis continued even after legal sales were open.  Those who market illegally do not have to comply with to the same production standards and rules as the legal producers.  Neither do they have to pay for the licensing and the taxes imposed on the legal trade.  These issues and more are examined in this conversation now that the industry is forced address in them in afterthought because they were not considered before they arose.  While the cannabis market can follow some traditional business models, it has challenges that are found in no other industry.

How to Launch a Great Cannabis Cultivation Business in Record Time

From Seed to Success

Ryan Douglas was a master grower at Tweed Inc. and he recently authored the book: From Seed to Success: How to Launch a Great Cannabis Cultivation Business in Record Time. Mr. Douglas explains what it means to be a master grower. In his new book, he opens up about the elements of success that are only gained through experience, and the must-know facts for new growers. Launching a cannabis cultivation facility is no different than starting any other commercially produced agricultural crop, but the excitement and potential for big profits can lead to lapses in judgment that prove devastating for many start-ups. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. An entrepreneur does not need to be an expert grower to launch a thriving cultivation business, and most problems can be avoided through the application of basic business principles and good management practices. Get the inside view from the master whose proven record of success holds something for every business entrepreneur.

How to Launch a Great Cannabis Cultivation Business in Record Time

From Seed to SuccessRyan Douglas was a master grower at Tweed Inc. and he recently authored the book: From Seed to Success: How to Launch a Great Cannabis Cultivation Business in Record Time.

NEW!
How Consumer Intelligence Data Levels the Market Playing Field

New Frontier logoJohn Kagia joins us from New Frontier Data where he works as the Chief Knowledge Officer.  The aspect of gathering consumer data has barely been broached in the cannabis industry because it is such a young industry.  Yet, doing so allows one to analyze the trends that have clearly formed.  Analyzing trends now is vital for this burgeoning industry that was already showing volatility before the advent of COVID.  New Frontier Data specializes in research and intelligence which put them at the forefront when they saw the need for gathering data here.  Equipped with years of data, they developed a unique understanding of where this past decade has brought us and how we can look ahead.   This is important to all aspects of the business because it allows one to respond to the market instead of just reacting to it.  Mr. Kagia shares this brilliant process with us, and he tells us what it can mean.

Senate Outlook on Changing Cannabis Law

National Cannabis Industry Association logoMorgan Fox works with the National Cannabis Industry Association as the Director of Communication.  Our conversation today is about expressed intentions by members of the Senate to bring major changes to cannabis law.   This might be a de-scheduling bill of some sort to remove federal prohibition against cannabis.  We can expect to see hearings in the Senate in this term.   While hearings on this may come faster than some expected, legislation will quite some time to pass.   Leading this effort are House Democrats who passed the MORE Act and it is support many advocates in Congress.  Hear the latest progress and forecasts where we are going.

The Future of Dispensaries

MJ Research logoMichael J. Regan & Colin-Ferrian join us from MJResearchCo which conducts investment analysis and valuation of the cannabis industry.  Prior to the pandemic, the model used for building a dispensary was the Apple store.  Depending on the size of sophistication of these dispensaries, one could spend anywhere from one half million to a million dollars on construction.  However, in the pandemic, cannabis was determined to be an essential product in some areas, so buying methods and delivery systems of cannabis suddenly changed.  Home delivery quickly became a huge business in California and Colorado.   Other states may follow.  They may also develop online purchasing and drone delivery.   What does this mean for the brick and mortar store and conventional dispensaries?

Consumer Evolution in the Cannabis Market

John Kagia works at New Frontier Data as the Chief Knowledge Officer. They have a new consumer survey that tells us about trends and attitudes in the US. This was to find how the consumer evolved over the past few years. They began with focus on the cannabis consumer based on their findings in 2018. Research went on to find why they are consuming and how legalization and the opening of legal markets changed their relationship with cannabis. This new research delved more deeply into the study of consumer practices and these updates were released last month in their ‘2021 US Cannabis Consumer Evolution Report.’ Listen in for their finding and what this information can mean to you.

Legalization Pioneer and Martyr Eddy Lepp

Eddy Lepp is on the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of legalization pioneers. If you are one of the many who enjoy recreational marijuana in 17 US states and medical marijuana in 37 American state, you owe a huge debt of gratitude to an iconic figure in the movement, Eddy Lepp.  Despite having a body that is now riddled with cancer, Mr. Lepp joined correspondent Rich Walcoff in what may be his last interview.   He tells the inevitable journey he went through that began with helping someone in need by providing them with medicinal marijuana.  This led to a vast grow in response to the need and demand of those around him.  This also led to his arrest and incarceration with a 10-year sentence.  Although he was offered no jail time in return for turning in his buddies, Eddy Lepp chose instead to serve almost 9 years of his sentence.   Nonetheless, conviction by the state could not match the convictions of a true pioneer who helped pave the way for the legalization we see today.  The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) called him a ‘marijuana martyr’.  Numerous law enforcement figures, including those on the prosecution side, lament the treatment that Mr. Lepp received.  In the end, his dedication and determination was one of the keys that turned the very long battle for legalization in a new direction, and one we can all appreciate today. Thank you for your service Eddy Lepp.

Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health, Associate Dean for Public Health Integration, and, Director of the Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions. She is also an epidemiologist and classically trained public health professional with expertise in health disparities and health equity, drug and alcohol dependence epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and prevention science. Today, Dr. Furr-Holden talks to us about equality where it is needed now, in cannabis reform. This rapidly changing and expanding industry is providing more than just recreational interests, it is enabling treatment with medical marijuana when and where it is needed in parts of the nation. These are advantages that need to reach everyone.
