How Pot Got Legal

Wayne JustmannWayne Justmann, sometimes called “the Godfather of Legal Weed,” he will forever be known as Patient #1 in the California medical marijuana program.  This pioneer in the cannabis legalization movement tell us that “All use of cannabis is medical.”  Wayne worked on the words of Proposition 215 in the years leading up to legalization in 1996.  This held that a patient, with a doctor’s recommendation or approval, could possess or cultivate cannabis for their illnesses and health related issues.   If you’re living in one of the 36 states which has legal marijuana, or one of the 16 states that permits growing and adult use for any reason, you may owe some debt of gratitude to Mr. Justmann.  He received the very first legal marijuana use card in the United States.  Hear the story of this pioneer trek toward legalization and the obstacles they faced.

BigMike on the Cannabis Industry

BigMike Straumietis is pioneer and founder in the cannabis-growing industry who used his combined experience in business, marketing, horticulture, and engineering. His company, Advanced Nutrients, revolutionized the industry by offering highly developed fertilizer made specifically for marijuana. This made Advanced Nutrients one of the most popular nutrient brands in the marketplace. BigMike became widely known as the source that teaches growers about hydroponic gardening. He offers an array of successfully marketed growing products, he also teaches growers in gardening techniques. His leading company, Advanced Nutrients, is premiering a line of products this quarter called, ‘BigMike’s Blend.’ This line includes pre-rolls, concentrates and vape pens, all developed with state of the art technology. Now we have legalization, decriminalization and the need for relief from COVID sequestering. BigMike lends his expertise on what he has seen in the industry and where he sees it going in the next 20 years and beyond.
Their NXTECK enables digital and programmatic advertisers and leading AdTech companies to better understand, target, reach, and engage with the legal cannabis consumer audience globally for increased campaign performance.

National Changes for Cannabis,
with Former Mayor Willie Brown

Willie Brown is the former Mayor of San Francisco and one of the leading Democratic figures for more than a generation. He is also the former president of Harborside, the first and largest marijuana dispensary in California. Mr. Brown has a deep understanding of California and its business, and he tells us about some of the challenges facing the cannabis industry. California did legalize medical marijuana, and not long ago, it legalized recreational marijuana. But California, like many other states, realizes the limitations that come in the absence of federal legalization. This means no national change in how you manage the resources, the banking, the payment systems and more, when you enter the legal system. As a result of that, you don’t have the normal kind of acquisition and opportunity with regular, ongoing businesses, like those who sell tobacco products. This forces an all-cash business in many cases. Added to this are high taxes and restrictive access to the product which makes it more challenging for the growers and the distributers to do it the right way. All of this encourages the black market which undermines the state-legitimizes businesses. That’s because black market entrepreneurs are not subject to the same regulations, costly guidelines and taxation. But because of the opportunities that abound, many businesses have found profitable avenues for their endeavors as they keep the industry growing. Hear insights from a man who is closely connected to the ever changing world of cannabis.

Easing Pot Conviction Impact

Debra Furr-HoldenDebra Furr-Holden, PhD is a professor at Michigan State University, a C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health Associate Dean for Public Health Integration, and, Director of the Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions. She is also an epidemiologist and classically trained public health professional with expertise in health disparities and health equity, drug and alcohol dependence epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and prevention science.  She tells us about her new initiative in Michigan to help those who have been impacted by marijuana laws.  Felony convictions leave a stigma that may take job opportunities and positions away for life.  Many financial benefits that one may have had become cut off.  Now that marijuana is not such a crime, how do people were convicted find a way to ease these burdens?

Market Analysis

New Frontier DataJohn Kagia joins us from New Frontier Data, a leading research organization, as we continue our Discovery, Engage & Compete series into the world of cannabis.  What can intelligence and analysis do in the cannabis market.  Mr. Kagia tells us how product development is changing in the cannabis market.  Reasearch shows that consumers are not just interested in raw materials, such as cannabis flour, for making marijuana-based baking and such. Now, more buyers are interested in finished, premade goods, so they don’t have to do the work.  Dispensaries are changing the product placement in their show rooms to put raw materials and the back, and new finish goods out in front.  This demand is expanding the product base lines and marketing approaches.  So, it seems, it is time to expand thinking in the marketplace.

Pandemic Patterns

The Reality CheckCharles Butler is a talk show host, based in Chicago, in the third largest market in America. His podcast program, ‘The Reality Check with Charles Butler’, addresses cultural issues and current topics of interest.  Now that the pandemic has spread around the world, we are seeing patterns in how is spread across the nation.  Consequently, cultural differences have apparently played a role in the susceptibility to this contagion.  African American communities tend to have a more social closeness in communal gatherings which are often more intimate than many European American activities.  Unfortunately, closeness in family gatherings and social affairs hastens the spread of the disease.  Statistics show that Africans Americans have be hard hit by the pandemic because of this and other reasons.  We focus on these issues as all Americans must continue to modify habits and not get over confident.

The Problems of Legalization

National Cannabis Industry Association logoAndrew Kline is the Director of Public Policy for the National Cannabis Industry Association.  Burgeoning freedom for cannabis created confusion in legal states over regulating, who is going to regulate and how to handle licensing.  At the same time, other new problems developed as the illegal marketing of cannabis continued even after legal sales were open.  Those who market illegally do not have to comply with to the same production standards and rules as the legal producers.  Neither do they have to pay for the licensing and the taxes imposed on the legal trade.  These issues and more are examined in this conversation now that the industry is forced address in them in afterthought because they were not considered before they arose.  While the cannabis market can follow some traditional business models, it has challenges that are found in no other industry.
